9 Ways to Romanticize Your Summer

Have you ever wondered how to make your summer days feel more magical and romantic? Did you know that the concept of “romanticizing your life” can actually boost your happiness and well-being? Embracing the essence of cottagecore living this summer, you can transform ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. Here are ten delightful ways to infuse your summer with romance, joy, and a touch of magic.

1. Create Your Own Morning Ritual

tStart your day gently with a cottagecore-inspired morning ritual. Wake up to soft, natural sounds or light, followed by mindful breathing and stretching to ease into wakefulness. Connect with nature by stepping outside, even if just for a few minutes on your back porch, patio, or balcony. Enjoy a warm beverage while reflecting on gratitude or setting positive intentions. Finally, engage in a creative activity like journaling, sketching, or playing an instrument, setting a peaceful and fulfilling tone for the day ahead.

2. Refresh Your Wardrobe with Summer Colors

It’s summertime! I’d be remiss not to talk about ignore summertime cottagecore aesthetics! Cottagecore and its minimalist floral patterns, muted tones, and whimsical silhouettes surfaced a couple of years ago and made us all want to run around in a field of wildflowers, have a picnic, and a fistful of daisies. Many have since moved on, but given the romantic, understated vibes the aesthetic brings, I’m not ready! Summertime is the perfect time for escapism, and that’s exactly what cottagecore brings.

Refresh your wardrobe with summer colors and embrace the enchanting essence of cottagecore with the Ellie Nap Dress from Hill House Home. Priced at $150, this dress is a testament to timeless elegance and comfort. The Ellie Nap Dress, an A-line wonder with elasticated smocking, ruffled shoulders, a tiered midi skirt, and pockets, embodies the slow living and holistic values that cottagecore celebrates. Inspired by 17th-century French textiles and delicate garden trellises, this print, which sold out almost instantly in the English Garden drop of February 2021, is perfect for those who appreciate natural living and minimalism. Its soft, comfortable fabric and pretty design make it an ideal choice for all-day wear, whether you’re tending to your garden, enjoying a picnic, or simply savoring the slower pace of summer.

3. Update Your Vision Board

Reignite your dreams and aspirations by updating your vision board for the season. Gather images that inspire you, set new intentions, and visualize the life you desire. I bought a few mini printers that I absolutely adore. The Canon Mini Printer with no ink needed! My other favorite is the Kodak Plus which prints 4 x 6 photos. Print directly from your smart phone or print from Pinterest. Let your vision board serve as a source of motivation and encouragement throughout the summer. Gather and curate meaningful images, quotes, and words from magazines, online resources, and personal mementos that resonate with your vision. Plan your layout creatively, organizing elements by theme or color, and then assemble your vision board with care. Display it prominently where you’ll see it daily, ensuring it serves as a constant source of inspiration and motivation towards living a serene and purposeful life.

I created my own vision board (book) this year with by using a sketchbook and the two wonderful little printers above, along with lots of magazines. I recently discovered that new magazines are really expensive! There are alternatives. Check with your local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook before you buy new magazines.

4. Cultivate Gratitude with a Joy Jar

Celebrate the simple joys of life by starting a joy jar. Each week, write down a positive experience or moment of gratitude on a slip of paper and place it in the jar. At the end of the season, reflect on these moments and cherish the abundance of happiness in your life. Decorate rustic jars with natural elements like pressed flowers and dried herbs, and personalize them with seasonal themes such as summertime blooms or holiday motifs. Incorporate daily gratitude practices, such as morning rituals and family activities, and focus messages on holistic health, personal achievements, and nature appreciation.

Here are a few items to go into your joy jar: Grateful for the blooming wildflowers in the garden. Thankful for the warm cup of herbal tea this morning. Grateful for successfully growing my own vegetables this season. Grateful for the loving support from my family during challenging times. Grateful for the cozy reading nook and the time spent with a good book.

5. Indulge in Self-Care

Set aside dedicated time for self-care and pampering. Treat yourself to a luxurious bath with fragrant essential oils, practice mindfulness meditation, or enjoy a soothing skincare routine. Prioritize your well-being and nurture your body, mind, and spirit. Engage in creative hobbies like herbal crafting, journaling, and DIY natural skincare, or indulge in culinary delights by cooking with fresh produce and preserving summer’s bounty. Prioritize mindful relaxation through pilates, reading, and evening bonfires. Finally, create cozy, nature-inspired spaces with DIY projects and an outdoor reading nook, enriching your summer with simplicity, tranquility, and a deep connection to nature. Which activity resonates most with you, or do you have other cottagecore-inspired ideas you’d like to explore?

6. Bring Live Plants and Fresh Flowers into Your Home

Bringing live plants and fresh flowers indoors during summertime is a fantastic way to boost your mood and improve air quality. Plants like ferns, spider plants, and peace lilies are excellent natural air purifiers, helping to remove toxins and release oxygen for a fresher, healthier home environment. Plus, the vibrant colors and natural beauty of flowers like daisies, lavender, and sunflowers can instantly lift your spirits and reduce stress, creating a tranquil and happy space. I recently discovered swamp sunflowers native to North America and wow, I’m glad I did. Some kind woman from a Buy Nothing group gave me a swamp sunflower in 2022, which started as a tiny little stub and is about 6 feet (1.8288 meters) tall. Check out the before and after below! I expect the swamp sunflowers to bloom this fall!

For fresh flowers, check out your local grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, or even your nearby farmer’s market for a beautiful selection. If you’re looking to buy live plants online, sites like The Sill, Bloomscape, and Etsy have a great variety of healthy, vibrant plants delivered right to your door. These options make it easy to bring a touch of nature into your home, perfectly fitting the cottagecore vibe and transforming your living space into a serene, rejuvenating haven. 7. Create a Cozy Outdoor Retreat

Creating a cozy outdoor retreat is a wonderful way to savor the summer while fully embracing the cottagecore vibe, even if you have a small space. An outdoor retreat offers a peaceful sanctuary for relaxation, reading, or enjoying a cup of tea surrounded by nature. Begin by selecting space-efficient furniture like foldable chairs or a compact bistro set. Bring in greenery with potted plants or hanging planters from online stores like Patch Plants or Bloomscape, which offer a variety of plants perfect for small areas. Enhance the ambiance with soft lighting using string lights or lanterns, and add a weather-resistant rug from Overstock to define the space and add comfort. For accessories, consider cozy throws, pillows, and floor cushions from Society6, which can be easily stored when not in use. These simple additions can transform even the smallest balcony or patio into a charming cottagecore haven where you can relax and enjoy the summer breeze. 8. Embrace Slow Living with a Technology Detox

Embracing slow living with a technology detox is an ideal way for cottagecore enthusiasts to fully experience the tranquility and beauty of summertime. One of my favorite books is Jaron Lanier’s 2018 book Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now. I haven’t necessarily deleted all of my social media accounts, but I have stopped using social media in the same way. I typically only use social media for business purposes now.

Disconnecting from digital devices allows you to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and reduce stress. Start by designating specific times each day to unplug and engage in offline activities. Instead of scrolling through your phone, pick up a good book like “The Simple Living Guide” by Janet Luhrs or “The Little Book of Hygge” by Meik Wiking. Use this time to explore hobbies such as gardening, knitting, or baking. Websites like Gardener’s Supply Company offer great gardening tips and supplies, while sites like KnitPicks provide resources for knitting enthusiasts. For baking, King Arthur Baking Company has numerous recipes and baking tools to get you started. By embracing a technology detox, you can cultivate a more mindful and fulfilling summer, reconnecting with nature and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. 9. Infuse Your Home with Aromatherapy

Infusing your home with aromatherapy is a wonderful way for cottagecore enthusiasts to enhance their summer living space with soothing scents and a calming atmosphere. Aromatherapy can help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote relaxation. To get started, use essential oils like lavender for relaxation, citrus for a mood boost, or eucalyptus for a refreshing ambiance. Diffusers, scented candles, and wax melts are excellent ways to disperse these aromas throughout your home. For a wide selection of essential oils and diffusers, check out websites like Plant Therapy and Eden’s Garden. Scented candles and wax melts can be found on sites like CandleScience and P.F. Candle Co. By incorporating aromatherapy into your home, you create a serene and inviting environment that perfectly complements the cottagecore lifestyle. Have you tried any aromatherapy scents in your home yet?
